The ABB RED670 is an Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) engineered for the ultra-high-speed protection of electrical transmission and distribution lines. As part of the Relion® 670 series, it specializes in Line Differential Protection, providing definitive phase-segregated identification of faults within the protected zone.
The RED670 provides a multi-layered protection scheme to ensure line integrity under all fault conditions:
Line Differential Protection: This is the primary function, providing high-speed, phase-segregated protection. It utilizes synchronized current measurements from all line ends to detect internal faults with high sensitivity and security.
Backup Protection Functions: To ensure reliability even if primary communication or differential logic is compromised, the RED670 includes full-scale Distance Protection (Z-zones) and directional/non-directional Overcurrent Protection.
Sensitive Earth Fault Protection: Specialized logic designed to detect high-resistance or low-level earth faults that standard overcurrent elements might miss.
Communication Capabilities: Supports dedicated fiber-optic links or digital communication networks (via LDCM modules) for the exchange of current vectors between IEDs at different line terminals.
System Integration: Fully compliant with IEC 61850 standards, supporting GOOSE and MMS for seamless substation automation and integration into modern digital grids.
High-Speed Fault Clearance: The differential principle allows for instantaneous tripping for faults within the protected zone, significantly reducing the thermal and mechanical stress on grid components.
Phase Segregation: By comparing currents on a per-phase basis, the RED670 can precisely identify the faulted phase, enabling single-phase auto-reclosing to maintain system synchronism.
